From my website, nathangartz.com:
At a young age, I found myself playing with fire more than my parents would have liked. At the age of two, I burned my hand on a blistering hot, flame-shooting mass some might more simply call a Weber® Charcoal Grill. More recently, I find myself playing with fire at 2350ºF.
Clay became my oasis at first touch. From the beginning I knew it was going to be my lifelong passion. However, I never knew how it was going to lead to success and happiness. After receiving advice from close people in my life, I found the right path to take.
I am currently on a journey towards artistic freedom, fenceless from expression and thought. I hope to lead my journey with the concepts from my ceramic mentors, Joel Pfeiffer and Kurt Kenas, and life experiences including the upcoming birth of my child with my love, Mel.
My main fascination is with glaze application. Whether pit firing, saggar firing, rakuing, or crystalline glazing, I delight in all of it. Ceramics has shown me a new view of science, formulation, and calculation that I never expected to be interested in.
Each day I crack the kiln lid open, I discover new worlds that didn’t exist prior to that firing.
My more recent studies in glaze application include glazes that use pure silver, gold and bronze in them as the colourant, as well as growing crystals in the glaze.
